Top Tips on how to get your home ready for Christmas
Are you wondering the same thing as me, where has the year gone? So many things have happened, and yet, we find ourselves here in the UK wondering (just like a year ago), will we be able to spend Christmas with our loved ones?
Looking back, things did get a bit better during 2021, and life has tried to find a new post pandemic normal. Whilst governments decide what to do next, there is no better time than now, to get into the Christmas spirit.
Last week, I was able to enjoy the Christmas lights and take a stroll around Central London, they are such a delight! If you are able to make your way into town, you should definitely schedule your visit for after sundown, to see them shine. Not too hard, considering by 5pm in London it is basically night time already!
Make way for Christmas
Getting all the family members involved is a wonderful way to create memories. Most of us love putting up the Christmas tree, but sorting out the ornaments is a different story. Not so fun chores can be more pleasant if everyone does their part. A good place to start is by decluttering. This will create space for the seasonal Christmas ornaments. You can set the mood by playing holiday tunes and baking delicious biscuits. Having a blank canvas will help you plan better, and visualise decorating ideas. Remember you can rearrange, replace, and even temporarily remove furniture to make way for Christmas.
I was at Selfridges a couples of weeks ago, and found the upstairs Christmas section small, but inspiring. Did you know you can get Christmas crackers there, that are more environmentally friendly? They also have some lovely ornaments.
Shine bright
Check your existing Christmas lights. Nothing worst than putting them up to later find out they are actually not working. Give yourself plenty of time to be able to order replacements or make it to a shop, should you need to go. Last thing you want is a Christmas tree with lit sections or in complete darkness.
To bauble or not to bauble?
Sometimes ornaments are lost or broken before reaching their next season. It is important to ensure you have everything you need, before turning your home upside down with baubles, glitter and garlands - you know what I mean!
I was inspired by the different Christmas trees around town this season. Some are decorated with floral and botanical motifs, whilst others have plush toys. You name it, you can do it, and why not? There is nothing wrong with decorating with the traditional baubles, but if you are feeling more adventurous, go crazy with a new theme!
festive wreaths
We love to focus on our Christmas tree - after all, it is the biggest Christmas holiday decoration we are most likely to have in our homes. But it is also important not to forget the front door. A simple lit garland around it adds character and sets the mood for what is to come. Alternatively, you can make your own wreath or buy one. For added impact, if you have the space, flank your front door with planters with Christmas lights to bring it all to life.
sitting by a warm fire
If you have a fireplace that will be in use during the holiday season, try to service it before the ornaments are out. We do not want you to freeze during the holidays. To make your life easier, you can add hooks on the mantlepiece and even on handrails. This will make adding lights, garlands and ornaments easier. Today, LED lights and batteries allow us to illuminate every corner of the house - the sky is the limit!
Nativity Crib
A long-standing tradition in my family passed down from generations is putting up a nativity crib. My grandma was the expert, she would create whole towns with rivers and mountains. It is a beautiful tradition. Once everyone has put up theirs, you would visit other people’s nativity scenes, some taking up whole rooms! In our London flat there is no space for such an elaborate productions, but we did manage to bring a tiny nativity crib from our honeymoon in Madagascar and it has found a special place on our Christmas tree.
Christmas Cards
During the holiday season we are due to receive a bit more post, or so one should hope! Most people display their Christmas cards as they come. The usual spots are mantle pieces and shelves. How about hanging them from the ceiling with fish lines or sticking them on a wall, or your refrigerator door in a Christmas tree shape? It could be a fun activity to do with the children.
