The 5 key things you need to consider when buying a new sofa

Buying a new sofa can be a stressful experience. There are just so many options out there, and the internet makes it almost impossible to settle for “the one”. As a piece of furniture, you’ll likely keep for many years, taking the time to consider these five things will help to make sure your purchase will stand the test of time.

Lifestyle

First thing, consider how you use the space where you will be placing the sofa. Think about how frequently, and for what purpose, the sofa will be used. The criteria are different when the sofa is to be used constantly, such as in the main gathering place in your home or in a spare bedroom for occasional use. If you’re in need of a sofa to accommodate children or pets, then your criteria change too. This is when fabrics come into play. Your lifestyle will dictate your fabric choice. Look for fabrics that are easy to clean and stain resistant – such as synthetic microfibres if children will be using it constantly. Soft but durable leathers or woven fabrics are great options too, as these will be able to stand up to everyday wear and tear. If you choose a leather sofa, don’t forget to condition the leather regularly to keep it from drying out and developing cracks.

For a less frequently used sofa, you can be more adventurous in terms of fabrics, such as jewel-toned velvet, suede, and on-trend cream bouclé. Delicate linens and embroidered jacquard textiles are stylish options too. Cole & Son has a great selection to choose from. Ultimately, however, choose a style and colour that you truly love and will make you happy, at the end of the day, it is you who will have to look at it every day!

Functionality (size is everything!)

It’s vital to check measurements to ensure the sofa will fit in your space (and through the doors)! Don’t forget to make sure it can also turn narrow corridor corners and if necessary, go up narrow staircases.

Depth, and height should be considered when looking at seating options. Here are some factors to think about when choosing a comfortable sofa. The shallower the seat, the more upright and supported you will sit. Deeper seats create a relaxing level of comfort where you can lean back or tuck your legs onto your seat.   Like a deeper seat, higher seating is recommended if you prefer sitting upright, whereas lower seating is suited for those who prefer moving from leaning back to sitting upright.

There are also sofas with built-in storage and pull-out beds if you’re looking to hide clutter or to accommodate guests.

Aesthetics

The first step in purchasing a new sofa is to determine the style you want. Is the style of the sofa one you would like in your home temporarily or for a long period of time?  It is also important to be able to visualize the furniture in the space. Are you going for a classical look or a more contemporary one? Think about the room, not just the isolated sofa piece. Make sure the design of the sofa you choose matches the room. A very important factor is colour. First you must identify if the room already has a colour scheme, and if the colours you have in mind, would work well within the scheme, or as a centrepiece. Ask yourself if the colours and finish speak to the space?

Longevity

Frame: A sturdy frame made from heavy solid wood will last for years while lighter wood or some engineered wood will eventually bend and crack. An expertly crafted plywood and pine frame are affordable but built to last. And ideally, you want as few separate parts as possible. The less joins there are, the less probability of it coming apart. The legs should be part of the frame or attached with screws.

Filling: The inside of the sofa is just as important as the outside. If the sofa has springs, they should feel close together and firm. As they say, the more, the merrier. Other sofas use foam. Pick a high-density foam that feels hard – if the foam is already soft when you test it, it will only wear out over time. Though keep in mind, your preference is important.

Softer seating is intended for those who like to sink into their seat for a more relaxed experience, contrasted with more structure, resistance and support found in a firmer seat. Firmer sofas tend to have a neater look in the home Also, do not forget about the sofa cushion fillings, they are as varied as pillows and mattresses. If you can, go to the shops and test them out as well, resist the temptation of buying them online, specially if you are not familiar with the brand.

Bespoke

The world of bespoke furniture is not, only for the rich and famous. There are many great customizable options available to suit every budget and style. Simply choose your style, desired configuration, and cover. Every home is different, as is your own unique lifestyle. Selecting a bespoke sofa to suit your own needs will not only improve the functionality of your space, but also elevate your interiors with a style that is perfect for the look you are going for. The other day I had the pleasure of visiting a local sofa shop in Battersea, and checked out their workshop. It was Latchmeres Handmade. Such a delight to be able to see how sofas are made.

The goal is to choose a sofa you’ll love forever, a good way to do that is to create your own unique configuration.
