Top 5 Tips for embarking on a redecoration project at home

Your home is your sanctuary.  You should feel comfortable, happy, and even proud in it.  Sometimes we have one space that we absolutely love and others that need a bit more of our attention. Just the thought of not knowing where to start can be daunting. Tackling a redecoration project at home can feel overwhelming, but it does not have to be.

First in line
: The first thing to do is determine which space needs the most urgent help.  There is always one room that bothers you the most or at least it is always in the back of your head. Basically, tackle one room at a time. The room will vary from person to person, but one should stand out from the others and that one is the one you should start with.

Expectations: We would all love to be able to afford anything and everything we want, unfortunately for most of us, that is not the case. We have our responsibilities, and we need to set a realistic budget for a project.   It does not have to be exact and it will change, but it provides a guideline that you should stick to.

Activities: Setting out clear uses for a space is key for your redecoration project.  In most cases, a room can have multiple functions.  I suggest creating a list to prioritise the main use and the subsequent ones.  This way, you can have a clearer idea of what type of furniture should be predominant in it.  For example, if you have a dining room that occasionally functions as a film room, a dining table has priority.  But if a film room occasionally functions as a dining room, comfortable seating takes priority, makes sense?

Shop at home first: After living with an object day in and day out, it can become invisible.  Once you know the main function of the room, you should make a list of things you need for it.  Before hitting the shops, take a stroll around your own home. If you make a conscious effort to look for objects that might work in your project and have a special meaning, you might be pleasantly surprised and even save some money!  Do not forget to look inside your storage spaces.  Just this weekend, I found a portrait my husband had drawn many years ago and is now proudly being displayed in our small loo.

Paint: It is an easy and affordable way to make an impact. No matter if the project is big or small, most likely, one or more walls will need to be painted. Keep in mind, just by changing the paint colour of your walls you can change the mood of your space.  I suggest choosing a couple of shades of the same or different brands of the colour in mind and apply them side by side on your wall.  Wait to see the colours in different lights throughout the day before committing to a colour.  You can read my blog on how colour can warm up your space for inspiration. If you are going to paint yourself, I suggest splashing out on some good quality paint, like a Sanderson paint. I have used it myself, your arms and shoulders will thank you! The coverage will be superior, and applying it will be quicker, therefore less elbow grease.  Another quick tip is to first make sure you have all your materials and equipment necessary to paint the whole wall.  If you are like me, petite, a step ladder will not cut it to finish the top portion of a wall.  You do not want to find yourself unable to reach spots halfway through the process!

Sometimes we need a bit of change of scenery, be it outside or in our own home.  No matter the size of a project, it comes with its variables.  No need to delay it, you can do it!  And if you still feel you are more comfortable delegating, contact me here for any of my design services.
